It may look like a New York City Taxi Cab to you, but in fact it's a police car - albeit an undercover one.
As I mentioned in a previous post, there was recently an enormously sad, tragic, death in the park. Since then, there has been a large police presence in the neighborhood. These police cars - one marked, one un-marked - are at the east side of the Northern Transverse. Quite near here is where many Dominican kids from Irving High like to gather.
But this isn't about the tragedy, it's about the police cars.
If you double click on the photo above, you'll see that the license plate is numbered T800070T, while the numbers on the roof are 2W79. This is not a legit cab.
In New York, the right to have cab is controlled by a medallion. It's the medallion, which is issued by the city in limited numbers, that allows a car to cruise around picking up passengers.
This medallion is firmly, very firmly, attached to the hood of a real cab.
All other numbers on cab are the same as the medallion number - the numbers on the side of the cab, on the licence plate, and on the roof - they all match, unlike the police car above.
The total number of Medallions in the city is a little under 13,000 - a number that has not changed significantly since WWII. If you want to see who owns the medallion of any cab - please go here.
