During much of today I heard various cable news shows displaying sympathy for the poor GOP - having their wonderful convention disrupted by Gustav. Why, George Bush, and Dick Cheney, scheduled to appear tomorrow night - have had to cancel their planned speeches.
How did John McCain ever get so lucky? The GOP convention was shaping up to be the big disaster. John McCain's chances of delivering a speech comparable to Obama's was nil. Was George Bush ever able to compete with Bill Clinton at connecting with an audience?
Aside from Doug Feith, Paul Wolfowitz, and his wife's colleagues at A.E.I - who wants to listen to Dick Cheney? (even Feith and Wolfowitz did so only to manipulate the old man)
The media keeps on repeating that the plans were changed because of Gustav - when in fact Cheney was already planning on going to Italy and Azerbaijan. And McCain has been running away from Bush as fast and as far as he can.
The fake tears supposedly shed in sympathy for the GOP are sad enough, but the real tragedy, the one that has already happened, is that once again a completely bogus storyline submitted by the GOP has gained acceptance.
Even the generally reasonable Moderate Voice has lost it:
In a generally-classy decision, the McCain campaign has announced that they will suspend all but necessary procedural activities for Monday...I would love to see the Obama campaign also suspend activities tomorrow and let us all direct our efforts to those in harm’s way.
In reality, McCain plans to go to Mississippi, avoiding the disaster that would be his convention and seeing what he and Cindy, Sarah and Todd Palin, some random kids, their Secret Service Team, their selected reporters, and police and ambulances on the ground, can milk from the disaster on the coast. He will not be providing help nor trying to save the people of the Coast; he is looking for them to save his candidacy. He won't be searching for those in need, only for photo ops. Obama will be watching the storm, staying out of the way of those who are actually trying to help, and planning how best to respond to those in need.
The people on the Coast, as well as in the rest of the country, need more like Obama - let's hope that this time the devastation that might happen tomorrow is not so bad that it is another demonstration of Republican incompetence.
