In Iowa on Monday, Rudy was questioned about his daughter's apparent preference for Barak Obama. On Tuesday he was asked about his Catholic religion.
As Newsday described it:
Giuliani insists that questions about his personal life are relevant only if the subject involves his performance as a public official.
He dodged the question about religion by saying:
"My religious affiliation, my religious practices and the degree to which I am a good or not so good Catholic, I prefer to leave to the priests," Giuliani said. "That would be a much better way to discuss it. That's a personal discussion and they have a much better sense of how good a Catholic I am or how bad a Catholic I am."
When he was running for the mayoralty, Rudy had no problem parading his kids and his second wife before the press and to feature them in his TV ads. Now his "personal life" is not relevant. Except when he wants to go on Barbara Walters to talk of true love with his third wife. When his personal life seemed to be picture perfect, Rudy insisted it be publicized. Now that it has been shown to be a fraud, he declares it irrelevant, and demands that his family's privacy be respected.
Rudy's shamelessness deserves no such respect. But his daughter does. His answer to the question concerning his religion was disingenuous, and also unworthy of respect.. But unlike Rudy's daughter, the Catholic church has made itself fair game. Compared with the alacrity with which it condemned Geraldine Ferraro, Mario Cuomo, and John Kerry, the Church's relatively silent rebuke of Giuliani, who has violated church teaching more frequently and more seriously, is shocking.
P.S. While in Iowa, Rudy continued to break the teachings of the Catholic Church with his constant lies. He claimed that New York was the crime capital of America the day he took office. In fact according to Time Magazine it was the 18th. He claimed to have the reduced the "size of government" in N.Y. He did not. There was a larger government, with more employees when he left than when he assumed office. He claimed to have "had the most experience in dealing with terrorism." Another lie. The fact that the city of which he was mayor was attacked is not "dealing with terrorism."
UPDATE:
Saltonstall, writing for the Daily News, describes this as pathetic pandering to the evangelicals, and doesn't think it will work.
h/t memeorandum
The left couches everything as a lie (or racism) and everyone as a liar (or racist). If you ever had a serious case of lying or racism, it would be diminished by the overuse of the words.
“What is the temperature? It is 78 degrees. Wrong! It is 79 degrees you lying weasel.”
I don’t know very much about Rudy but the left attacks him so he must be all right. It is a curiosity to remember the pre Rudy New York and to visit the post Rudy New York and listen to the left’s claims that he had nothing to do with the transformation. Or, perhaps the filthy old dangerous New York City was really better after all.
I truly do love New York. It is, arguably, the greatest city on this planet.
