David Gregory did ask a decent question at today's press conference. He was just far too circumspect. Instead of just asking if Bush believes he is credible on Iraq, he really should have asked if there is any reason for anyone to believe Bush on anything.
In the conference, Bush replied to a question about the investigation into The DOJ,
"If there's wrongdoing, it will be taken care of," Bush told reporters at a Rose Garden news conference"
It reminded me of this response to questions about Valerie Plame
And if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of....If somebody did leak classified information, I'd like to know it, and we'll take the appropriate action.
As the Carpetbagger pointed out, (h/t memeorandum) Bush came no way near answering the question. His response did contain one of Bush's signature arguments; one which I find really chilling:
“It’s better to fight them there than here. And this concept about, well, maybe let’s just kind of just leave them alone and maybe they’ll be all right is naive. These people attacked us before we were in Iraq. They viciously attacked us before we were in Iraq, and they’ve been attacking ever since. They are a threat to your children, David, and whoever is in that Oval Office better understand it and take measures necessary to protect the American people.”
A whole lot of the "them" that are being killed in Iraq are entirely innocent people. Neither the Iraqi people nor its government ever harmed us in any way. Yet hundreds of thousands of them are dead. No Iraqi was involved in 9/11. Prior to our occupation of Iraq, there is no evidence that there had ever been a single Iraqi suicide bomber.
Any Christian who follows subscribes to the theology of a just war has a very hard time with a pre-emptive war. But using an innocent people for your battleground is unspeakably immoral.
