I'd like to be wrong, but I'm betting that poseur extraordinaire Arlen Specter was trying for an Oscar today. He showed fury -but the most intense anger was used to fault Gonzales on his lousy preparation for a news conference - hardly an offense that would justify firing the guy.
While he looked ferocious this morning, the afternoon questioning was quite tame. Very little of his allotted time was spent asking questions about the firing of the prosecutors. By requesting that Abu send him some answers in the future, he seemed to be saying that Abu will be the Attorney General for some time to come.
If the cagey Specter does vote against Gonzales, Bush is even a lamer duck than I knew. But it's more likely that he was doing his usual bait and switch - acting as if there was an outrageous offense to his prinicples, and then voting as instructed by Bush.
