Even though they have no stores in Manhattan, every so often Target does some promotion here. It's almost always worth seeing, and this year's it's brilliant. (It's also outdoors at night, so it's not brilliant in the sense of bright which is why this photographer was not too successful.)
President Lincoln stands on the northern most transverse across Union Square Park. Normally he is not surrounded by the pillars and other "stuff."
After darkness falls, a light show appears on the cobblestones of the walk. At times the shapes are all white, then they morph into colors, as they change shape and swirl.
Target hired the studio of Tord Boontje to do the work, and writes that it is "Boontje's signature animals and iconic designs - playing, darting, spinning, and even floating away."
The designs seem to run away from you as you walk through it; you can't actually step on any image as they flee just before you would catch them. Above, a man carries a briefcase on his way home from work. He is walking over the pattern that is in the photograph just before the photo of him.
Kids totally love this installation. Different movements create different patterns of images on the ground - by spinning like a Dervish, this guy has created a throbbing circle.
Visiting Tord Boontje's site give you a better idea.
