Reaction to the bombings in Mumbai has been muted in the Blogosphere. I have no doubt that there is a certain amount of racism in this. While there were 52 dead in the bombing of trains in London, much more attention was paid than when close to 200 have been killed in Mumbai. Simply put, the lives of people of color are seen as less valuable in our culture. I also think that the lack, thus far, of a clearly identified villain, hampers the ability of people to discuss it.
There are some preliminary indications that responsibility for the attack lies with a Kashmiri separatist group which has been supported at times by Pakistan. If this is so,then I have to ask you to reread my piece of June 30.
The desire by this administration to increase the supply of sophisticated weaponry, such as the newest F-16's, to dictatorships in unstable parts of the world is really beyond stupid.
Bush applauded Israel's incursion into Lebanon, a country that actually has a democratically government, saying that Israel has every right to defend itself. If it is confirmed that there any of sort of Pakistani involvement in the groups that committed the atrocities in Mumbai, would Bush similarly approve of India's bombing the Karachi International Airport? Would he approve of embargoes that stop the Pakistani people from importing food and medical supplies? It seems that the worst President of the United States, ever, has managed to hire the worst Secretary of State, ever.
