I don't agree. For one thing, Dean wasn't his only witness. For another, calling attention to the similarities with Watergate, and having an avowed Republican partisan do it, was valuable in and of itself. (Most of us that can remember Dean don't remember him as a "convict"--that was mostly out of the public eye. The bulk of the press he got was as AG and as a Nixon loyalist).

The question, in my mind, isn't why didn't he consult with the "leadership" before addressing an obvious attempt to subvert our constitution, but why they didn't jump on the bandwagon, or even get there before him?

For most of the "talking point" responses to this question, there are clear and cogent counters:

Dean AG? Really? If you are going to rewrite history, you might as well make it appear even more favorable.
Bustard is spot on with his analysis.

MarkusQ - Thanks for your comments - many commenters don't really engage, and instead comment on a side issue, which makes yours' more appreciated.
Still, I can't say that I agree with you. Dean never was an Attorney General (At the time it was Mitchell; an unforgettable appointee, if only for his lovely wife Martha.)Dean was never particularly partisan, nor a loyalist. One of my problems with the choice of Dean is that he had already written a book saying that Bush was a crook, 2 years before the FISA issue. Thanks for your links, but I've previously mentioned my disappointment in Glenn's allowing his passion to get in the way of his smarts, and I'm trying to restrain from criticizing him.

Rick - thanks again; but I'm a little frightened if you think that I'm spot on with an analysis!
