12-07-05Union Square is a subway crossroads - which may not mean much to a lot of people, but is incredibly significant to us strap-hangers. (the 4,5,6, N, R and L trains all pass through here. So for two bucks you can get to Grand Central Station, Bloomingdales, or Yankee Stadium or Wall Street)

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas a bunch of shop are established at the southern end of the square.

Washington Square is about 7 blocks from here - but we have a far more impressive statue of the real G.W.
Of course, there are half a dozen or so Christmas Tree sellers each year at the Farmer's Market. A few sell only trees. Others add trees to their regular merchandise. For the last couple of years I've bought natural, "Charlie Brown" type trees from a guy who is famous for his garlic.

Guarding the shops means a circuitous route for many strap-hangers (aka subway riders)

Almost every New Yorker complains about the big box guys, but at least Barnes & Noble has some respect for the architecture.

It once was a bank - now a quite good fish restaurant - The Blue Water Grill
This guy's been selling the slicer (Made in Switzerland of Surgical Steel) for about 15 years.

There is almost always someone playing music at the Market, sometime a few groups are at it at the same time.

Still pretty hot, hot hot, - not the coffee. But it is going surprisingly strong after all these years.

I remain unconvinced that this kind of advertising works in New York.

This guy used to park his truck on West Broadway in Soho. He's now spending a lot of time up here. The sculpture is based on the iconic photo of the building of Rockefeller Center, during the Depression.

This wall is solid blocks of stone. The symbols you see on its face are seasonal.

About a month from now, look at what's happening along the 15th Street transverse.

It's just a pile created by the sanitation department; unless it's way better than Disney.

I can not explain this. Young people carried their pillows on the subway to come to this.

As I read this manhole cover, which I have walked over hundreds of times without noticing, I think that there should be three of these in a row.
02-22-06
So far, I have found two of these. They are about 15 yards apart - one on the sidewalk that surrounds the park proper, and this one which is up a few steps into the park itself. I'm missing the third one.

At least you can see that The Onion is given away freely.

Filming a movie, people from L.A. try to recreate the Farmer's market at Union Square. In fact, no farmer would survive just slinging the fruit into little bags. We need variety! We need Prices! Any real apple farmer sells them lose, and has at least ten varieties.

Actually - - both father and son are starting to get energized.

He's heading straight for the bag where the donations are made! Dad's excited at how fast he's learning this lesson.

It is in fact dog food, but it's also got that New York excess we all know and love(?).
03-23-06
There's a high school about 1 block east of the Square - Kids tend to hang out in Union Square after they're let out. (After voluntarily striking this pose, he asked me not to post this on the web. Am I bad?)
03-24-06
I finally found it. Please look at 2-22-06 - but this one is not in a straight line with the other two.

He's filming himself, making some sort of inspirational video that he sells over the web.

Traditions in China dictate against donating organs at death. The Protesters argue that the Government takes organs from Living Followers of Falun Gong
