Rich on Bush
Being it's a Sunday and all, I thought that I would search the New Testament. I cannot find a single instance where Jesus waterboarded anyone. Torture was just not his thing.
If only Bush was really a believer, he'd agree with Thomas Jefferson's words:
"I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice can not sleep forever."
Frank Rich's piece in today's N.Y. Times is a must read. "The 'Good Germans' among us points out that "Bush is not the only one to blame for torture." It is our country, and we elected him.
Not surprisingly, the right goes ballistic. Macsmind [sic] is one of many who think what we do isn't torture, and I'm sure he'll change his mind as often as he needs to to keep redefining torture. DreadPundit falsely accuses Rich of an error in logic. He should look up the word "comparison" in any dictionary. Flopping Aces wins today's "Anti-Truth" medallion, by writing:
In the end you cannot get over the simple fact that conservatives have been condemning large scale murder and torture by nation states such as Saddams for years, while liberals excuse it.
Remember the iconic photograph of Donald Rumsfeld happily shaking hands with Saddam from 1983? He was acting as Reagan's envoy at the time.
But I'll leave the last word on torture to our first President, from a letter he wrote on August 19, 1775 to the British General:
Not only your Officers, and Soldiers have been treated with a Tenderness due to Fellow Citizens, & Brethren; but even those execrable Parricides [traitors] whose Counsels & Aid have deluged their Country with Blood, have been protected from the Fury of a justly enraged People."
