A.J. Liebling fails at his valiant attempt to make sense of Andrew Sullivan today. Surprising, the fault lies in Mr. Liebling's generosity.
Sullivan has a post entitled: Best. Movie. Line. Ever., in which the entire post consists of:
Sometimes being a bitch is all a woman has to hold onto." "Dolores Claiborne", not Hillary's forthcoming campaign slogan,"
followed by a video clip showing the line as it was delivered.
There is no political commentary in Sullivan's post - hell, there's not even a sentence in his post. It us pure self-indulgence. He thinks that the scene is hilarious, and so he shares it with us. And he gets paid to do so.
Mr Liebling's excellent effort at a more meaningul explanation doesn't work. The only alternative is that Sullivan feels the need to re-establish his gay bonafides, and thinks a reference to Mildred Pierce too obvious. If a post soon appears singing the praises of Ronald Reagan, we can be sure that it is all part of the series designed to have us marvel at the conundrum that is Andrew Sullivan.
