There really can be no doubt of the reason for Rove's departure: abject failure.
As he proved in electoral campaigns, divide and conquer can be a valid strategy. Divide and govern, however, is a recipe for disaster.
He leaves behind no durable domestic success. Privatization of social security, immigration reform, and the destruction of medicare were goals unreached. "Faith based initiatives" and "No Child left Behind" are slogans that will be soon forgotten.
His real legacy is the degradation and politicization of both our national discourse and our government itself. Even War was just a political tool for Mr. Rove. The lies told and the lives lost were merely a prop for Rove's never ending campaign.
After the tragedy of 9/11 united our country, he hastened to redivide us, and it is for this that he will be neither forgiven nor forgotten.
When his time comes for his final departure, one can only hope that he enjoys his well earned spot at the lowest level of Hell, with the comparatively amateur Osama bin Laden at his side.
